Europe is currently experiencing an unprecedented population movement with migrants and refugees fleeing conflict, persecution and extreme poverty in the Middle East and North Africa. Hundreds of thousands of people, many women and children, are resorting to extreme measures to find a better tomorrow in Europe and elsewhere.
The risks these migrants and refugees face are great and the consequences can be fatal. Shocking images in the media have revealed desperate scenes of families who have lost their loved ones. A recent report says 2,000 Syrians trying to reach Europe have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea.
But behind the statistics and stories are lives.
On this perilous journey towards a better future, we can at least help with the most basic of things. Water, food, hygiene items, clothing, sleeping bags, blankets, temporary shelter and basic healthcare are essential to rescuing people from the depths of their struggle.

Red Cross Response To Date
- Seven mobile Red Cross teams provide assistance on a 24/7 basis at northern and southern border crossing points of Macedonia. Teams are also positioned on the border with Greece.
- In Hungary, Red Cross volunteers are providing first aid and medical assistance as well as hygiene kits, psychosocial support and reunifying family services.
- In Serbia, the Red Cross is distributing food parcels and hygiene items at reception centres in the south.
